The Tapestry of Bayeux – An early Mile Stone in a long history of Love and Hate
This time it can perhaps be described as a gesture of love in the midst of a divorce trial. French President Emmanuel Macron announced in January the loan of this 11th Century treasure to the United Kingdom. The display will take place in about two years. The location has still to be decided. The tapestry depicts the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066. Its current role in European Politics is to assure the United Kingdom that Europe will be a good friend to Islanders regardless of the Brexit. For the time being, it can even be viewed as an offer of reconciliation, an invitation to the UK to re-consider the Brexit.
Our speaker is Roy Mepham who, as we know from our English Club “Brexit Evening” a year ago, is a former Englishman who obtained German citizenship due to his distaste for the Brexit initiative. Roy is also a Francophile, speaks fluent French and has walked many a mile in the French countryside enjoying its attractions. Roy will untangle the complicated and sometimes mysterious history of the tapestry and open a discussion on the role its display in the UK may have in the current political upheaval.
